Still Lifes
One of the keys to successful two dimensional artmaking is a developed rendering abilities. Drawing is the fundamental skill which informs all other artistic endeavors. Students practice observational drawing as a critical component in all advanced classes. In the photographs below student chose between two still life scenes concentrating on Value (light and dark),placement on the page ,emphasis, visual balance and contrast. Drawing sessions such as these build observational skills, patience and discipline which will aid the developing artist in other creative pursuits.
"The Marilyns"
Students in the Advanced Drawing and Painting and the AP Art Studio created a series of Marilyn Monroe portraits in the style of Pop artist Andy Warhol. The assignment was structured to challenge the student in developing a color palette, color mixing, and color design with the Warhol's silkscreen as a reference. part of the challenge was retaining the silkscreen "look" with paint and brush.Students also added, as an element of emphasis, pushpins contrasting the slick painted surface with a textural element. It is evident that there were many solutions to the problem.

City Heights Photo-Walk AP Summer Camp 2011
AP students engaged in a little game using a camera and their eyes. The object is to take a group "nature" walk in the City Heights area. 8 students share one camera. As the one holding the camera photographs something of interest, all the other students must converge to that spot and locate something of interest as well. It makes for an interesting photo journal of the walk.
Below are photographs taken in sequential order of a late morning summer walk. Enjoy!
