AP Summer Camp 2011

AP Art Summer Camp is designed to introduce incoming students to the AP family. Students above worked on a Civil Rights mural on display in the art quad. Students worked on the piece griding it out on paper, transferring it to the wall and then working from a negative/positive ground.
The work to this point was finished within 3 hours. It is evidence of what our students are capable of in the proper work environment. There are those that argue that quantitative data is the only measure of success. I will heartily disagree. It is the setting which stimulates a reaction that produces the desired result.Again, many of the students in this group admitted they had never painted or painting was something they'd experienced in the remote past. On completion of the first day, it was evident that they were as amazed as I at what they were able to accomplish in such a short time. The pride of unrealized craft was as visible as the paint on the canvas. One student puzzled over how in a classroom setting she would struggle for weeks to cover 8x11 inches, but in 3 straight hours of work, had covered 2.5 square feet. How do you measure that kind of data within the confines of standards and spreadsheets? You can't! Art fills a far greater need.Art builds confidence, self-reliance, pride and courage. Look at the expressions on these students. If numbers move you, then take these into consideration: 5feet x 12feet = 4 hours!
